Stevia grade selection

Stevia Reb A vs Reb M: How Should Buyers Compare Samples?

Ingredient sourcingPublished by Guilin Hengliyuan Biotech

Compare Reb A and Reb M steviol glycosides by identity, composition, production route and real-formula sensory testing before selecting a supplier sample.

Reb A and Reb M are different steviol glycosides, not interchangeable names for one stevia grade. A buyer should compare the named glycoside, total steviol glycoside content, production route and taste in the intended food or drink. “Reb M” on a listing is not enough to establish purity, supply method or better flavour in every formula.

This guide is for selecting trial samples. Product-specific percentages and market eligibility belong to the current supplier specification and destination-market review.

What do Reb A and Reb M names tell you?

Both belong to the steviol glycoside family, but their molecular structures differ. FDA notice records identify Reb A as one glycoside and describe Reb M as another. A specification may report total steviol glycosides, a named glycoside percentage or both; those figures answer different questions. Ask for the analysis method and the composition of the actual grade. Do not read a total steviol glycoside figure as a Reb A or Reb M percentage.

Why does the production route matter?

Some steviol glycoside preparations come from leaf extraction and purification; other notified preparations use enzymatic conversion. FDA notice materials describe a Reb M-rich preparation made by converting a Reb A starting material. That example does not establish the route used by every product sold as Reb M. Request the production route, ingredient declaration, selected grade's specification and batch documents. Check the destination market's rules for the actual preparation and use, rather than transferring a conclusion from another route or country.

How should a beverage team compare taste?

Make two samples in the same beverage base, using the same process and target sweetness. Record sweetness onset, peak, linger, bitterness, flavour interaction and appearance. If the product will be served cold or contains acids, protein or fruit flavour, use those real conditions during the trial. A general claim that one glycoside always tastes better will not settle this decision. If a blend is considered, test it as a third material and record the other ingredients in it.

What belongs in a quotation request?

Name the intended product, destination market, required ingredient restrictions, annual estimate and sample quantity. Ask Hengliyuan which stevia grade and production route are available for that request, then confirm the named glycoside content, total content, test method, batch COA and packing for the offered grade. Do not assume an advertised percentage, MOQ or lead time applies to a different grade. Compare quotations only after both samples and documents refer to the same purchasing item.
